Mix dal khichdi or multi-grain khichdi has tons of health. You can’t even imagine that in 1 portion of khichdi how much protein, vitamins, and minerals you are getting.
Origin of Khichdi
The earliest reference to khichdi is from Sanskrit word “khiccha“, meaning a dish of rice and legumes.
Normally, people make khichdi from rice and lentils but there are other variants also in the form of Bajra khichdi which is very popular in Rajasthan.
In the north, Moong dal khichdi is very popular and people enjoy other accompaniments like plain curd, pickle, poppadum etc.
Health benefits of Mix dal khichdi
Generally, people consider khichdi as a patient’s meal. Hospitals serve khichdi to many of their patient’s in meals.
At home also, when you are sick, khichdi becomes the most important meal for the entire family.
Because of it’s health benefits, khichdi has got a place in weekly menu in majority of homes. It is very easy to digest and easy to cook.
It has lots of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals and since people like it in almost liquid form, the water content is also good.
Khichdi Variations
Usually, khichdi is a combination of rice and one type of dal. But people cook it with more then one type of dals also.
The various combinations of khichdi are:
Rice-moong dal khichdi
Rice-Urad dal khichdi
Rice-toor dal khichdi
Other variations include Bajra khichdi, mix-dal khichdi, masala khichdi. Today I will be sharing the recipe of mix dal khichdi.
The ratio of rice and dal is very important. The ratio, that you have to take is 1:1, i.e if you are planning to take 1 cup of rice then dal should also be 1 cup.
Religion connect
According to Hindu mythology, it is a belief that if you eat khichdi on Saturdays, it is very auspicious. Many people (including my house) avoid eating khichdi on Thursdays.
Some people say that khichdi should not be eaten on Tuesdays as it affects your health. But there is no full-proof evidence of these beliefs.
National connect
At some point in time, there were rumors that the Government of India is planning to declare “khichdi” as national food but later it was denied.
Ingredients
Instructions
- Wash rice, and mix dals thoroughly and soak them separately for 20 minutes.
- Place a cooker on gas and add ghee, whole red chili, heeng, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and saute for 1 minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes, salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and saute for 1-2 minutes.
- Now add soaked rice, stir gently. Add soaked mix dals, give it a gentle stir, add water as per the required consistency and adjust salt. Close the cooker with the lid and cook for 1 whistle.
- Serve the khichdi in a serving dish, pour some pure ghee, and serve hot with raita, papad, and chutney.
